Gift Your Gear supports young people taking part in the Annual Ten Tors Challenge event on Dartmoor.
Following last year’s successful pilot of a new category for the Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge called ‘Fresh Tracks’. The programme has been created for young adults with a range of challenging life issues from both mainstream and special needs schools, was created, coordinated and delivered by the Equine Assisted Learning section at the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust, called ‘Ponies Inspiring People’.
The students, from Teign Academy, Teignmouth Academy and Ratcliffe special needs school at Dawlish, had ten weeks intensive training to build their handling skills with ponies, walking safely in the moorland environment, navigation, first aid and team work. They were supported by trained pony handlers, moorland guides, first aiders and their own support staff, as well as members of the DPHT volunteer team.
Needless to say a very good time was had by all.
