Gift Your Gear – Nottingham Narrowboat Project Spring 2018

The Gift Your Gear groups are really important. After all, supplying the groups is what Gift Your Gear is all about. We thought it would be a good thing to introduce some of the groups to Gift Your gear readers. We are sharing some of the stories from Gift Your Gear groups that received outdoor gear from the generous donation made in the Rohan Shops March 2018

We are really grateful to Nottingham Narrowboat Project for this…

In Spring 2018, we aim to take over the running of the Nottingham Narrowboat Project from Nottingham City Council, who currently subsidise the project. Operated by skilled and qualified Volunteer Skippers and Crew, two 70’ long narrowboats, one equipped with disabled access, currently operate around 75 trips per year, hosting up to 12 people per boat – around 900 people per year experiencing the Canals and Rivers of Nottingham and the East Midlands. Groups from schools, colleges, youth organisations such as Scouts, Guides and the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, as well as those helping disabled and disadvantaged groups from inner city areas, gain practical hands-on experience of navigating the boats, operating locks and bridges with many also getting valuable life skills from residential trips of several nights away. Confidence, self-esteem, interpersonal skills and self-reliance are many of the benefits of our trips highlighted by tutors, carers and the young people themselves. Additionally we host a number of local care homes, with elderly people, many in various stages of dementia, able to revisit locations from their past and bring back memories of their youth.

Some of the groups come without suitable waterproof clothing and outerwear, since they don’t always possess it, so this restricts the activity during inclement weather. Being a beneficiary of Gift your Gear will mean we will have a selection of waterproof gear they can borrow and get maximum benefit from the trips out with us, without worrying about the weather!!

The picture were taken during a trip by Nottingham University Hospitals Youth Group. It was a sunny day  on this occasion, but you can see that when it is raining or bad weather, we still want the young people to be able to get outside and help run the boat and do the locks.

The Father Christmas trip is another popular trip we do and again the absence of suitable wet weather gear restricts what we can do with some groups.

Buoyancy Aids and Life Jackets will also be most appreciated.
