Spring Brook Academy

Where does the gear go?

The latest update from the Gift Your Gear groups:

Following the success of Spring Brook Academy’s first year in delivering the D of E Bronze Award to our year 10/11’s, we have now pushed on and completed our second year with both a Bronze and a Silver group gaining their award.

For our SEMH students being in the countryside to develop independence, resilience and social skills is a massive boost to their mental health and personal skills that they can use in later life.
As the Outdoor Education has been such a success at Spring Brook Academy over the last 2 years we have now set up an outdoor education programme for the whole of Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) to follow and benefit from. This year our pupils in Key Stage 3 will be achieving the John Muir Award which allows them to experience and explore their local countryside and restore it in some way by taking part in an ecological project towards the end of the year. Hopefully this will also prepare our pupils to then step up and complete their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award upon reaching Key Stage 4 when the time comes.

Our pupils generally have no way of obtaining the correct equipment or clothing to use for their outdoor education which is why Gift your Gear is so important to us as a school. They have provided us with all of the essentials we need for our pupils to succeed in the Duke of Edinburgh award and it is our greatest thanks to them for helping us. We honestly wouldn’t have changed our curriculum – for the better – without their donations! – Spring Brook Academy September 2019
