The Winners – Great Outdoors Awards 2013

The Great Outdoors Magazine has unveiled the winners of the 2013 Great Outdoors Awards at a ceremony in Kendal.

The key winners on the night were Gift Your Gear – which received a Judges’ Special Award – and Rab, which picked up both the reader-voted award for Outdoor Clothing or Equipment Brand of the Year and the judges’ award for Clothing Product of the Year.

Other winners included Cotswold Outdoor – which picked up the Chain Retailer of the Year award for the second year running – and the Ramblers, whose coastal access campaign was named Environmental or Access Initiative of the Year.

Shortlists for nine of the awards were drawn up following nominations by readers of the magazine and members of the public. The winners were then determined by an online public vote.

There were also four specialist gear awards, which were judged by a panel of experts and representatives from The Great Outdoors Magazine, following entry submissions from outdoor clothing and equipment brands. In addition, the judging panel decided to create a special award to commend the work of Sarah Howcroft in launching Gift Your Gear, a project that enables members of the public to donate unwanted outdoor clothing and equipment to benefit young people.

The Great Outdoors Magazine’s Editor, Emily Rodway, said: “The judging panel were unanimous in their decision to create a special award for Sarah Howcroft’s Gift Your Gear project which we feel has great potential as an initiative that encourages sustainability and enables young people to get out into the great outdoors. It would be wonderful to see more retailers get involved as collection points for the scheme.
